What was the problem?_

Lighticians are a team of innovators and experts in lighting for video production, especially in motion pictures. The co-founders have been in the film industry for over 20 years. Some of them are active gaffers, working on set with fixtures from different manufacturers. In the olden days, all the lights and fixtures were controlled from the big, expensive and motionless consoles. While mobile apps became more popular, some of the manufacturers started to build apps to control their lights and fixtures. However, the apps they had built were dedicated only to their fixtures, making it impossible to use on a regular set, where you rent different equipment from rentals. That is why the Lighticians came into play and had taken a step further. They decided to join the hardware and the software, via wireless DMX protocol and opening a new path to wireless management, controlling different lights and fixtures via a single mobile app.

What we have done_

We were hired as experts to rebuild their PoC into a viable MVP, so they could present it to the world, and we did it! We started with short workshops and product design. The next step was to set the Gemini lights, a fixture from partner company the Litepanels, and we used their Apollo Bridge hardware piece to connect it all together with an iOS application, supporting both iPhone and iPad. The wireless communication between the hardware and software created an ideal IoT experience allowing every gaffer to manage the lights on the set wirelessly, with one thumb and always on the move. The MVP was delivered just before the BSC Expo in London in January 2020, where we altogether celebrated its success.

What we have learned_

The learning curve was really high. Before getting into the design, development and software integrations, we had to understand the theory of light and what are the key methodologies within motion picture production, from a gaffer perspective. Once we picked it up, it was all a bit easier to get going with the product design and development. We have incorporated easy and understandable UI/UX design, which was an extreme challenge because of the number of functionalities, light modes, and fixtures that can be used in a single scene set. The next step was to integrate all the hardware and software pieces together to assure the seamless experience and allow the end-users to experience fully wireless light management. We did it all, and we have really succeeded, Lighticians are ready to change the game!
