Soon after, we're on a Zoom call, discussing project milestones tracked in JIRA and catching up on the latest updates in our Notion team space. Depending on our roles, the next steps involve diving into GitHub for developers, Figma for designers, or HubSpot for sales teams. Navigating through half a dozen services before our morning coffee gets cold is common today. Each interaction introduces different types of risks. Let's dive into these risks and how you can navigate them.

The Revolution of Software as a Service (SaaS)

The software as a service (SaaS) model has revolutionized access to tools, eliminating the need for substantial hardware and software development investments. Integrating AI into these services further enhances their functionality, bringing ease of use and automation. Low-code and no-code platforms also democratized the development of software, making it accessible to a wider audience.

And yet the external nature of these services — the elimination of on-site infrastructure investment — introduces significant risks. As we increasingly depend on SaaS platforms, it's essential to understand and address their potential dangers.

Understanding Security Risks

When we use tools developed outside our company, ensuring they meet our cybersecurity standards can be challenging. This includes concerns about their availability — vendors may not commit to the uptime we expect. Access control and authentication present similar challenges. Although many tools allow team management, not all enable setting company-wide policies, such as mandatory two-factor authentication, leaving accounts vulnerable to brute force or password spray attacks.

Another critical area is data confidentiality, with the risk of data breaches. This risk is amplified in low-code/no-code platforms, which might compromise the platform and the applications built on it, potentially introducing avoidable vulnerabilities. AI integration introduces further risks, such as unintended data leaks. Large language models (LLMs) may retain input data for training, posing a risk of sensitive information being inadvertently shared with others.

Compliance with data protection laws like GDPR and CCPA is another concern, especially with AI tools. Their auto-training nature often makes it impossible for individuals to exercise their right to be forgotten — always check for compliance before loading a batch of personally identifiable information (PII) into any system. 

Beyond the known issue of AI "hallucinating" or producing inaccurate outputs, there's the danger of attackers poisoning the training data to manipulate the model into generating malicious responses. An example is tricking the model into relying on a compromised library in a generated Python script.

Mitigating the Risks

Kicking off risk mitigation means doing your homework on potential SaaS providers with a keen eye on security and compliance. First, find a security page or, better yet, spot an ISO or SOC2 certification badge on their website. That’s a green light, signaling the company takes security seriously. But don’t stop there. The provider’s reputation matters too. Handing over sensitive data to a company shrouded in mystery, operating out of who-knows-where, is a gamble you don’t want to take. It’s true, the big names in industry-standard tools might seem like magnets for cyber trouble, but their track record for snapping into action with fixes and advisories quickly after discovering a vulnerability is exactly what you need.

When it comes to low-code/no-code platforms, put on your detective hat. These platforms often don’t dive into security-related implementation, like how they clean up data inputs or keep secrets safe, leaving us to fill in the blanks.

Bringing a new SaaS tool into the fold should naturally lead to a refresh of your internal policies and a boost in employee training. Ensure the training covers the ins and outs of the tool, including setting up access controls and safeguarding data. This is critical for AI-based tools to avoid data leaks or the spread of false information the tool might generate. Empowering your team with knowledge not only keeps them safe but also sharpens their skills, reducing the chances of slip-ups that can leave you vulnerable.

Use SaaS Wisely with a Sharp Eye for Security

Leveraging external SaaS solutions grants a significant boost to business operations. But this move also introduces a spectrum of risks — spanning security, operational, legal, and compliance challenges — that businesses must navigate carefully. Awareness and understanding of these risks are the first steps toward effective mitigation. Businesses can significantly reduce their vulnerabilities by adopting a proactive approach to vetting SaaS providers, updating internal policies, and staying vigilant against evolving threats. A smart approach to security is a continuous cycle of assessment, adaptation, and improvement to keep pace with the changing tech landscape. This is especially important in light of AI integrations appearing on every corner of the internet, with all the additional risks they pose.
